This iPad is only 2 months old… This untimely broken iPad screen was caused by the “Smart Cover” which is a single sided case sold by Apple. They are quite popular and normally work well because they are so simple: magnets in the iPad chassis make the Smart Cover align to the edge of the iPad, thus protecting the face of the screen with nice Italian leather. This cover provides no shock resistance (obviously), instead it provides a pseudo stand/screen protector service.
The Smart Cover, Does Not Prevent a Broken iPad Screen when Dropped
Unfortunately the Smart Cover’s strength, the magnets, are it’s weakness. The iPad above was destroyed because someone (in a hurry) picked it up with the cover of the case, letting the iPad itself hang 4.5′ perilously above the ground. When the weight of the iPad became to much for the magnets, the iPad released from the Smart Case and crash landed on the tile floor below. Refer to the image below to see the hinge in action.
I believe most iPad owners purchase this case when they first purchased the iPad because it is cool looking and easy to use. The case itself really does not make any claims to “protect” the iPad, which is a “Smart” move by Apple. If you do own one of these cases, make sure you hold the iPad properly using it. Properly means hold the actual iPad and let the case flap in the wind. I know this seems like common sense but we all get into a hurry and end up just grabbing things…
