6 Months Later, Wife Still Loves Kindle Fire

Kindle Fire, Christmas Morning

Almost 6 months ago I secretly bought my Wife a Kindle Fire. On Christmas Morning (morning for us is 2 AM…) she unwrapped her mystery gift and was delighted. Having a Gen 1 Kindle, she was able to transfer all of her books, add our Netflix account and even watch her K Dramas (South Korean TV) on the new device.

At the time I was glad I could surprise her, but the thought in the back of my mind was: “How long will this last?”  Now my wife is not fickle, but I believe many of us get an itch or craving for something new when it comes to tech. For example, my phone is a Nexus S 4G. When I first got it I thought it was the bomb…

Samsung, Google, Nexus S 4G

Now, I can’t wait for the contract to expire so I can hock it. Over time it has developed issues and limits and I’ve lost hope for my phone. My wife’s Kindle on the other hand continues to please and entertain. It’s usually in her hand as she is an avid reader. She is always telling me about this and that. (What is 50 Shades of Grey?)

To wrap this up, I honestly think the Kindle Fire is the best gift I got for my wife next to the wedding ring. Seriously, technology can be so fleeting we often take it for granted and shell out hard earned money to have it. It is nice to know there is still stuff out there with staying power!

Avoid a Broken iPad Screen

Ouch

This iPad is only 2 months old…  The untimely demise was caused by the “Smart Cover” which is a single sided case sold by Apple.  They are quite popular and normally work well because they are so simple:  magnets in the iPad chassis make the Smart Cover align to the edge of the iPad, thus protecting the face of the screen with nice Italian leather.  This cover provides no shock resistance (obviously), instead it provides a pseudo stand/screen protector service.

Unfortunately the Smart Cover’s strength, the magnets, are it’s weakness.  The iPad above was destroyed because someone (in a hurry) picked it up with the cover of the case, letting the iPad itself hang 4.5′ perilously above the ground.  When the weight of the iPad became to much for the magnets, the iPad released from the Smart Case and crash landed on the tile floor below.  Refer to the image below to see the hinge in action.

The hinge of a common Smart Case.

I believe most iPad owners purchase this case when they first purchased the iPad because it is cool looking and easy to use.  The case itself really does not make any claims to “protect” the iPad, which is a “Smart” move by Apple.  If you do own one of these cases, make sure you hold the iPad properly using it.  Properly means hold the actual iPad and let the case flap in the wind.  I know this seems like common sense but we all get into a hurry and end up just grabbing things…

Bing Weather on Windows 8

The saga of Windows 8 continues.   When I have the time, I have been running Windows 8 on my laptop so I can get a feel for it and report my findings here.  I wanted to personalize the new Windows but ended up in awe over the information readily available when it comes to the weather app.

Personalizing Windows 8, in my opinion, is limited and the interface looks very basic.  Sure you can create a custom log on screen with a nice picture and even incorporate the picture to your unlock.  But once logged in you are greeted with the dynamic metro tiles with a mundane, plain background  that you can only adjust the colors on.  What has happened to Windows Aero?  The beautiful frost and transparencies are non-existent in the Metro Interface…

The Weather App however is beautiful to the max and has so much info associated with it I find it incredibly useful but daunting at first.

The Bing Weather App, start page, Windows 8

To the left is the start page of the Bing Weather App.  The whole Bing motif is carried to this app by a dynamic background image representative of the current weather conditions.  Now if you live in an underground bunker, you will surely find this very useful and thought provoking…  The start page also has a 6 day forecast with pretty little weather icons for you to show off to your friends.

Not just weather information, weather information by the hour!

Moving to the right, the information deluge begins.  Bing Weather’s second screen is an hourly forecast, that’s right, hourly.  So if you want to know if it is going to rain at 3 o’clock, Bing Weather has an answer.  Accuracy is not guaranteed though.  But when is any weather forecast really accurate?

Weather maps of all kinds.

Continuing with the odyssey of info, Bing Weather has maps of both your region and country.  I started to feel like a weatherman on this page; as I clicked on the maps, I was rewarded with a video of the weather in the region.  This allowed me to come to my own (wrong) conclusions about the weather to come.  Although cool, keep in mind video takes bandwidth so be warned.

For info-maniacs Bing Weather has Wolfram|alpha information.

If your mind isn’t numb from the information yet, continue to scroll to the right to get Historical Weather data from none other than Wolfram|alpha!  Want to know what the temperature or rainfall was like in January this year?  Bing Weather has it.  Want to draw your own conclusions to global warming, Bing weather can help because it pulls the information from Wolfram’s servers.

Great for the traveler or the dreamer...

To wrap up, we’ll go back to the beginning.  When you first launch Bing Weather, you can choose what place the app focuses on.  As an added bonus you can add places, allowing you to see with a few gestures what the weather is like in other locales.
